Home > Policies > Health > Extend Medicaid’s dental benefits to former foster youth under age 26 and extend dental benefits for pregnant women to the post-partum period

Our community based work with former foster youth has confirmed that access to dental services by adults is a major unmet need in Maryland.  Therefore, expanding Medicaid dental benefits to former foster youth is essential.  This step also brings their benefit package into alignment with that of other young adults who are able to stay on their parents’ plans to age 26.

Low-income Pregnant Women
Low-income pregnant women have demonstrated dental needs. Since dental coverage ends the day the baby is born, it makes it impossible for new mothers to make follow up appointments or get information on the importance of good oral hygiene practices for her child.
