There are six bills being heard in the House Economic Matters Committee that would delay or amend the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act. We oppose HB 98, HB 779, HB 1262, HB 1314, HB 1417, and HB 1421 as these bills would impact Maryland’s low-wage workers across the state from accessing earned sick and safe leave. Please consider submitting written testimony or contacting your Delegates to urge them to vote no on all six bills!
SB 304 received an unfavorable report from the House Economic Matters Committee. Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (MHWFA) will continue with no delays! Thank you to the members of the House Economic Matters Committee and their support of earned sick and safe leave for the low-wage workers and working families of Maryland.
ACY will continue to follow the successful implementation of the new law. Even though there are concerns about next steps, eligible full time workers can begin to accrue leave and will soon be able to take off a full day within six weeks.

Today a public hearing for SB304 will be held in the House Economic Matters Committee. It is not too late to contact the Delegates of the committee to share your continued support for supporting over 700,000 Maryland workers’ ability to accrue earned sick and safe leave. Delaying the implementation of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act until July 1, 2018 will leave many families without access to paid leave during one of the worst flu seasons to date. Please urge the legislators of the Economic Matters Committee to vote NO on Senate Bill 304.
Join us tonight for a press conference. SB304 will be heard on the floor tonight at 8:00pm. We can not allow them to delay the implementation and accrual of earned sick and safe leave! Again, do not forget to call your representatives!
Details for tonight’s press conference:
When: 7:30pm Monday, February 5, 2018
Where: Lowe House Office Building, 6 Bladen Street, Annapolis, MD 21401
Baltimore City Delegation Room

Today the Senate Finance Committee passed SB304 with a critical amendment to prolong the implementation and accrual of earned sick and safe leave until July 1, 2018. Call your Senators and Delegates as soon as possible to urge them to vote NO on this bill as it will harm many hard working families. The Healthy Working Families Act needs to start on February 11th for the 700,000 Marylanders who deserve this.
Yesterday Senate Bill 304 was introduced which would delay the enforcement/effective date of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act. Implementation would still begin on February 11, 2018 which means covered employees will begin earning paid or unpaid sick and safe leave.
Thanks to you and our coalition partners the veto override of HB 1 was successful! ACY is excited that the Healthy Working Families Act will go into effect on February 11, 2018. This victory ensures that workers will begin to accrue sick and safe leave beginning in just a few weeks.
