As a result of HB 911, Rachel White, our Child Welfare Policy Director was appointed to the Maryland General Assembly’s Workgroup to Study Shelter and Supportive Services for Unaccompanied Homeless Minors. This workgroup is chaired by Senator Mary Washington and Delegate Geraldine Valentino-Smith. State entities represented include the Department of Housing and Community and Development, Department of Human Services. Department of Juvenile Services, Maryland Department of Health, and Maryland State Department of Education.

This workgroup was established to study the unique needs of unaccompanied homeless minors, and identify the public and private sector programs and services available to meet those needs; identify gaps and barriers in public and private sector programs and resources available to meet the needs of unaccompanied homeless minors; identify barriers to access safe shelter and compile information on shelter practices in other states; and make recommendations on: legislation, regulations, policy initiatives, funding and budgetary priorities to address the needs of unaccompanied homeless minors in Maryland before December 1, 2019.
