The data collected by Advocates for Children and Youth shows that the “tough on crime” approach championed by automatically charging youth as adults leaves these youth in legal purgatory. This practice delays youth from returning to their communities to serve their sentences and receiving support that is part of the rehabilitative process. The automatic charging of youth as adults, in many cases, creates unnecessary gridlock and trauma for the youth.
