There are expedited procedures for relatives who take custody of children when the Department of Social Services gets involved with a family. This procedure is critical as eliminates the need to place children in a non-familial environment when there are relatives willing to immediately care for them. However, there are conflicting definitions of “relative” in Maryland’s statutes and regulations.
We need legislation to:
• Consistently allow close family friends (“fictive kin”) the same licensing benefits we have for relative caregivers.
