Advocates for Children and Youth co-chairs the Maryland Coalition to Reform School Discipline, a network of advocates and stakeholders working to improve laws and policies that impact discipline practices and student outcomes across the state. The Coalition is working to create state and local regulations, policies, and guidance that promote fair, equitable, and appropriate discipline practices designed to keep students in school and learning. The Coalition also is advocating for clear and limited roles for highly-trained school police and SROs, so that they are not involved in routine discipline matters, and students are not criminalized for behaviors that traditionally would have been handled by school administrators. We are pressing for comprehensive data collection on discipline and school police contact that is accessible to families and school communities. The Coalition is working with other groups of stakeholders to advocate for training in restorative practices and other alternatives to school exclusions.
