With Advocates for Children and Youth’s support, the Maryland State Board of Education adopted school discipline regulations designed to reduce suspensions, eliminate disparities in discipline, and keep kids in school.  Advocates for Children and Youth is working with the State Department and Board of Education to research and advocate data collection and analysis, guidance, and regulatory language that will allow for the implementation and enforcement of these discipline regulations.  As a result, Maryland’s school systems will become responsible for eliminating the disproportionate impact their discipline practices have on students of color and students with disabilities, and also for analyzing their school-based arrests and referrals to law enforcement.
