Policy Priorities

Implement Response to Intervention in sixth through ninth grades so that students receive the individualized interventions they need to meet rigorous academic standards and not drop out

Improve teacher quality in challenging schools, by having strong principals, offering incentives to recruit and retain effective teachers, providing professional development to strengthen instruction and making it harder for ineffective teachers to come to or stay in these schools

Implement key strategies to improve kindergarten readiness of Latino students, particularly in Prince George’s County

Recent Successes

Renewed state focus on closing achievement gaps and ensuring that all students have effective teachers, by providing professional development and performance incentives and accountability

Stronger supports for principals so they can more effectively use greater autonomy over their schools

Sharp drop in school suspensions, because of the use of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and other strategies that address the root cause of acting out behavior
